MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD — GENESIS 1:27

SCRIPTURE

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

GENESIS 1:27 — KJV

CONTEXT

Genesis 1 presents creation as ordered, intentional and repeatedly called good. Humanity enters that creation bearing the image of God. The verse repeats “created” three times and “image” twice, emphasizing both our origin and our responsibility.

God’s image is not reserved for one race, nation, class or ruler. Male and female are named together. The sacred worth described here belongs to humanity.

INTERPRETATION

Biblical traditions differ on everything contained within the phrase “image of God.” It has been understood through humanity’s moral responsibility, capacity for relationship and calling to represent God’s care within creation.

At its foundation, the passage rejects the idea that one human life is naturally worth more than another. People cannot be reduced to property, statistics, enemies or disposable bodies.

JUSTICE

If human beings bear God’s image, dignity is not something governments, institutions or crowds can grant—and it is not something they can erase.

Race, nationality, sex, wealth, disability and social status do not determine who deserves protection. Justice begins by refusing to dehumanize. Mercy begins by recognizing suffering. Love becomes action when we defend another person’s dignity as faithfully as our own.

REFLECTION

• Who have I been taught to see as less human?

• Where have I excused suffering because the victim belonged to another group?

• How would my choices change if I remembered that every person carries sacred worth?

THE WORD

Before any nation, institution or human hierarchy, Genesis places sacred worth upon humanity. We did not create that worth. We are responsible for honoring it.
